Herreshoff Model Sailboat History

The Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, founded in 1878, became a celebrated American yacht-building firm, known for its innovative designs and high-performance boats. Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, the company's primary designer, created a range of vessels, including America’s Cup winners and fast, able racers. The company's legacy is preserved in the Herreshoff Marine Museum, which holds nearly 500 models, hundreds of tools, and thousands of archival documents. The museum's exhibits are ever-growing, with the latest including "A Matter of Scale" and the "Love Rocks Picture Gallery" in the ARIA Gallery. The Herreshoff Catalogue Raisonné is an extensive online resource that documents each known boat designed by or built by the Herreshoffs, offering a comprehensive view of their history and production.
For about a hundred years, from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century, boats were built in Bristol, Rhode Island, under the name of Herreshoff. Herreshoff-designed-and-built sailing yachts dominated national and international regattas, and Herreshoff steam yachts were among the world's fastest. With them came worldwide fame and prestige. Nathanael Greene Herreshoff (1848 - 1938), the designer of most of these yachts, is regarded by many as the preeminent yacht designer of that time, if not of all time. His contemporaries called him The Wizard of Bristol, and this became also the title of the first, and still the best, biography of N. G. Herreshoff, first published thirteen years after his death by his son L. Francis Herreshoff, himself a noted yacht designer.
